HISTORY

Broken Volume has been together since January of 2004. It has been a long journey for the two founding members Bruce Swift, and Tony Velazquez. Bruce and Tony started playing together from the time they picked up their instruments. Performing in a cover band locally, they honed their skills and began to write a new style of Metal. In the early 80's their band Sacred Warrior, with lead vocalist Rey Parra, developed a following. They went on to record a few albums, and were nominated for a Dove Award in 1986. The band was billed as the Premier Christian Metal Band. Tony was voted favorite drummer in Heaven's Metal Magazine, and Bruce was chosen to be in the first center poster of the same magazine. After an exhausting schedule, the band decided to call it quits to spend time with their families. Bruce and Tony continued to create music together. Collaborating with musicians attending the same church, an eight song Demo CD was recorded. With the eighties far behind, and the nineties coming to an end, the music took a right turn from Metal to straight Rock. The bassist Tom Owens, and guitarist Derek Funkhouser, along with the two veterans called the band 90 and Nine. Soon after the Demo, Tom decided to pursue an art career in California. After a long search for a new bassist, Bruce, Tony and Derek had just about given up. One night, Bruce and Derek were leading worship for a Men's conference at Harvest Bible Chapel in Rolling Meadows. A newly converted Christian introduced himself to Bruce. Their search was over. Galen Theodorou had recently surrendered to the Lord his talent of bass playing. PRAISE GOD. The rehearsals started soon after the Holiday Season of 2003.With a busy schedule, including school; Derek decided to take a break from the band. This left Bruce with all of the guitar work, as well as the lead vocals. After trying to make the band a three piece, they decided to add another musician. Galen had been in many secular bands, including a side project for a Creed tribute band. The vocalist for the band Weathered was Chris Corbett. Galen hesitated asking Chris to join his new band. “Chris seemed to be very dedicated to his cover band,” explained Galen. Chris also heard the call to honor God with his musical talent, joining Bruce and the boys shortly after singing in Galen's wedding. The only thing missing was a name for the new line-up. They came up with 39 Lashes. After recording another Demo, the guys realized they had enough material for a full length CD. So back to the studio they went. With much prayer, not to mention two other bands using the same name, 39 Lashes had to go. The search for a name was on again. Enter Broken Volume. According to Bruce and Tony, “The message of the Gospel rings loud in the hearts of us all.” So loud the Volume is Broken.
